Bowen Therapist Essendon

To date, the list of bodyworks and therapies that have and are being created and performed all over the world continues to grow. However, one known therapy here in Australia that has seen to be effective is Bowen therapy. Bowen therapy has been recognised to be effective in terms of pain relief and healing.

What makes Bowen therapy unique is that it involves the gentle movement of the fascia to effectively relieve pain and promote healing. The fascia, which is the soft tissue that covers muscles and organs, is being subjected to precise rolling hand movements so that all involved parts of the body will be ultimately free from any pain or stress. The effectiveness of the therapy has helped alleviate migraine, low back pain, jaw pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, bunions, flat feet, and many more.

But how did it all start?

Knowing Thomas Ambrose Bowen

Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) was born in Victoria, Australia. During his 30s, he began developing his own alternative therapy that can treat skeletal, muscular, and neurological disorders. The formation of this specific therapy stems from his fascination with alleviating human suffering as well as discovering new hand movements that can help in healing certain body parts. Even without formal training in any bodyworks, he continued to enhance and finalise his technique.

Bowen believed that his natural talent in discovering his new alternative therapy was ‘a gift from God.’ After carefully studying all elements of his newfound therapy, he then began treating the injuries, pains, and aches of his friends and family. He also extended his work to local sportsmen and colleagues in Geelong. To find the exact location of the pain, he stated that he could clearly feel tiny vibrations that come from the affected muscles and parts.

In the 1960s, he finally opened his own clinic so that he can treat patients with specific ailments and pains. Through his clinic, he performed about 13,000 treatments a year. He also established free clinics for community service workers, children, and people with disabilities.
